BISMARCK, ND - On a windy Sunday, the University of Mary men's soccer team suffered a 6-1 loss to No. 19 Fort Hays State at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
Â
It was a closer contest than the statistics show, especially in the first half of the match. Mary (5-5-0) trailed 1-0 going into halftime and even outshot the Tigers 5-4 in the first half.
Â
But the second half was full of excitement for the visiting team. In the 56th-minute Arsenio Chamorro found Luis Mendez for the score from about 12 yards out on the left side of the field to give the Tigers (4-2-1) a 2-0 lead.
Â
Derick Gonzalez scored his first goal of the match in the 65th-minute and 11 minutes later he tacked on his second goal of the match from 13 yards out.
Â
Tyler Vancamp increased the FHSU lead to 5-0 after getting a rebound and putting the ball back in the net passed Mary sophomore goalkeeper Ludvig Rhodin.
Â
The Marauders weren't going to accept being shutout for the fifth time this season after Jordan Pearce received a beautiful pass from Aaron Brennan as his shot curled in from the left side of the field. It was Pearce's fifth goal of the season.
Â
Mary trailed 5-1 after the Pearce goal in the 87th-minute but a very short time after FHSU's Damion Cooper scored the last goal of the match to cap off the 6-1 victory over the Marauders.
Â
The Tigers outshot Mary 15-12 and had three more corner kicks compared to the blue and orange. Andre Almqvist was given the only yellow card of the match as both teams finished with five fouls each.
Â
Rhodin gave up six goals, recorded two saves but was given the loss as he falls to 5-5-0 this season.
Â
The Marauders finished 1-1 for the week after defeating Dakota Wesleyan 4-1 Wednesday, Sept. 21. Mary will play its final home game of the regular season against the University of Jamestown on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
