Corner kicks doom Marauders for second straight day

BISMARCK, ND – For the second straight day, corner kicks proved the undoing of the University of Mary women's soccer team. Augustana University scored the winning goal on a corner kick served directly into the net in a 4-1 victory by the Vikings over the homestanding Marauders.

Mary opened the weekend with a 1-0 loss to Wayne State College. The lone goal of the game was scored on a header off a corner kick.

The Marauders (0-3-1 overall / 0-2-0 Northern Sun) scored the only goal of the first half. Following a scramble from a corner kick, the ball rolled out to senior midfielder Michelle McGeary. The Mary team captain didn't hesitate, blasting an open look from 25 yards out straight into the upper reaches of the net just 27:53 into the game. It was her second goal of the season.

Augustana (2-3-1 / 0-2-0) knotted the score in the 61st minute when Emily Jacobson tallied from 20 yards out just over the outstretched arms of Marauders goalkeeper Hannah Smith.

The game turned in the 75th minute. With a brisk wind blowing into the Marauders net, Vikings midfielder Courtney Almendinger served a corner kick from the left side of the field directly into the back right corner of the net – just under the crossbar - to provide Augie its first lead of the game at 2-1.

Less than eight minutes later the Vikings struck twice in quick succession. After an initial shot eluded Smith, a Marauders defender attempting to clear the ball kicked it into a teammate, deflecting the ball into the net for an own goal and a 3-1 deficit. With the Marauders slightly discombobulated by the turn of events, the Vikings again struck 25 seconds later at 82:32 to seal the game.

The game statistics showed the game was played closer than the score indicated. Augie had a 13-11 edge in shots but both teams placed seven shots on frame. Both teams were whistled for four fours and both were called offsides four times each. The Vikings did have a decisive 11-2 edge in corner kick attempts.

The Marauders next visit Bemidji State University on Thursday, Sept. 22. Mary returns to host the University of Mary on Sunday, Sept. 25, to close out Homecoming weekend.
