Martin scores first collegiate counter in Marauders road loss to Beavers

BEMIDJI, MN – Patricia Martin scored her first collegiate goal and the University of Mary women's soccer team outshot Bemidji State University in this Northern Sun conflict but the opportunistic Beavers claimed a 4-1 home win over the Marauders.

The last two Mary opponents scored the game-winning goal against the Marauders on corner kicks. Tonight, Bemidji State's first goal came off a corner kick as Miranda Famestad scored her fifth counter of the season on a header off a Raquel Thelen serve in the 22nd minute.

The Beavers doubled their lead on a Bayley Ertl goal 12 minutes later.

Despite a strong first half attack, the Marauders didn't break through until early in the second half. Just 3:15 out of intermission, senior Michelle McGeary found Martin in scoring position and the freshman from Helena, MT, buried the opportunity. Martin's inaugural goal allowed the Mary to cut its deficit to 2-1.

Bemidji State then turned up the pressure. Over the next 26 minutes the Beavers forced Hannah Smith to make three saves and face three corner kicks while the Marauders managed one off-target shot. The pressure soon paid off when Sarah Stram converted a penalty kick for a 3-1 BSU lead in the 75th minute.

Refusing to fade, Megan Searson led a furious attack for the Marauders. Over a six-minute stretch, the senior was stoned on three shots by Beavers goalkeeper Catherine Arneson and had a fourth attempt clank off the crossbar. For the night Searson was credited with ten shots and five shots on frame, both game-highs.

BSU sealed the game on a Rachael Norton goal in the 88th minute.

"We played very well tonight," said Marauders head coach Sarah Cook. "It was tough not to get a result from our efforts. We completely outshot our opponent but the Beavers capitalized on their set piece opportunities."

The Marauders held an 18-12 edge in shots while the Beavers had a slight 9-8 edge in shots on goal. BSU also had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks but committed 11 fouls and was offsides four times to six fouls and no offsides for Mary.

Mary next plays a homecoming weekend game on Sunday, Sept. 25, when the Marauders host Minnesota Crookston at 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
