Isaac Lindquist and
Trevor Zacher led the University of Mary in scoring with 16 points apiece but the Marauders couldn't keep pace with 21
st ranked and defending national champion Augustana. Behind a big first half, the visiting Vikings sailed past the Marauders 89-75 in Northern Sun play.
Lindquist drained both his 3-point shots and made 7-of-10 field goals on his way to a season-high 16 points. Additionally the senior post player tied for the team lead in rebound with five. Zacher hit two treys and all four of his field goal attempts plus had a pair of steals and four rebounds.
Two other Marauders (5-6 overall, 3-2 NSIC) also reached double figures.
Bryan Jefferson chipped in 15 points and
Pat Thomas scored 13. Thomas led the Marauders with four assists and two steals.
Luke Scott came off the bench and made two treys and scored seven points.
Adam Beyer was perfect behind the arc for the Vikings (8-2, 4-1), making all four 3-point attempts. He was 7-of-10 overall and scored a game-high 24 points. Mike Busak added 16 for Augie and Jordan Spencer had 15 with nine assists.
Augie made an impressive 55.9 percent of its shots on the night, including 10-of-16 on 3-point attempts. The Marauders clicked along at a solid 46.7 percent and hit 8-of-17 behind the arc. The Vikings held a 38-23 rebounding advantage, leading to a 40-28 edge in points in the paint.
Baskets by Lindquist and Thomas to open the game gave the Marauders a quick 4-0 lead but an 11-2 run by the Vikings put Mary behind early. Shortly after a Zacher trey tied the game 13-13, Augie went on a 12-2 run to build a double digit advantage at 32-20. A Lindquist 3-pointer with about four minutes left in the opening half pulled the Marauders within six points. The Vikings then regained control, running off 13 of the final 18 points of the first half to enter intermission up 49-35.
Augie kept up the pressure out of the locker room, outscoring Mary 9-2 in the first three minutes to build a 58-37 lead. The closest the Marauders would get to the Vikings the remainder of the game was 14 points after Zacher connected on a four-point play and
Erron Collins followed with a trey.
The Marauders loss snapped a 3-game win streak overall and a 3-game home win streak. Mary closes out December with a visit to Minot State University on Saturday, Dec. 17.
