MINOT, ND –
Bryan Jefferson reached a career milestone and
Damonta Henry just missed a career-high for the University of Mary in an 82-75 loss at Minot State University, snapping the Marauders three-game win streak over the Beavers.
Jefferson became the 18
th Mary player to crack 1,000 career points. Needing 18 points to reach the milestone, the senior all-conference forward from Aurora, IL, scored 21 against the Beavers. He made 8-of-12 shots from the floor and all five free throw attempts. Jefferson also just missed his second double double of the season with a team-high nine rebounds.
Jefferson is the first Marauders player to register 1,000 points since Anthony Moody and Jordan Wilhelm both cracked quadruple digits in the 2010-11 season and just the fourth Mary player to accomplish this feat in the school's NCAA era. He now has 1,003 points wearing the Orange & Blue.
Henry tied for game-high scoring honors with 25 points, one shy of his career-best. The senior guard from Chicago, IL, also passed a major milestone, surpassing 900 career points. Henry hit two treys, made 9-of-16 shots and made three steals.
Isaac Lindquist was the only other Marauders player who reached double digits. The senior forward added 13 points and four rebounds for Mary.
Russ Davis scorched the Marauders (5-7 overall, 3-3 Northern Sun) from the outside, making 8-of-10 3-pointers and leading the Beavers (6-6, 2-4) with 25 points. The remainder of the Minot State team was 1-of-8 behind the arc. Stevan Jovanovic had 16 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Rudolph has 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Beavers shot 50 percent from the floor to 44.3 percent for the Marauders and held a 44-29 edge in rebounds. Minot State's edge in shooting helped the Beavers to withstand 18 turnovers to just seven for the Marauders, allowing Mary outscored MSU 17-8 on points off turnovers.
Baskets by Jefferson and Lindquist capped an early 12-2 run for the Marauders to grab an early lead. The Beavers responded with a 9-0 run and stayed in front the rest of the night. Mary closed within one point late in the first half on a Henry jumper but eventually trailed at intermission 35-32.
Down by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Marauders continued to grind away. Eventually Mary closed to within four points on a 3-point play by Jefferson but just 13 seconds remained in the game. After a free throw by Nathaniel Moore gave MSU an 80-75 lead, Henry was called for an offensive foul with six seconds left. A
Pat Thomas foul two seconds later sent Rudolph to the line and the junior forward capped the Beavers win with a pair of free throws.
The Marauders return to action Dec. 30 at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
