Marauders Come Up Short Against Colorado School of Mines, 66-64

ORANGE, Calif. - Hannah Larson tied the Division II school record for blocks with eight and Dani Williams banged a three-pointer at the buzzer but Colorado School of Mines held on for a 66-64 victory at the second day of the CCA 2016 Tip-Off Classic.

Three Marauders scored in double-figures as Mary is now winless in the tournament.

Williams led all scorers with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting in 30 minutes of play. She also hauled down six defensive rebounds and finished with two assists.

On top of the eight blocks, Larson finished 5-for-8 from the floor with 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three steals

And freshman teammate Lauren Rotunda scored 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting. It was her first collegiate double-digit scoring game. She posted eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Mary (0-2, 0-0 NSIC) shot 43 percent from the floor, made 7-of-20 three-points and held the Mines to 33 percent from the field but 13 second chance points and 27 bench points pushed CSM (1-1, 0-0 RMAC) ahead of the Marauders in the end.

The Marauders had a 10-point lead in the first quarter and took a five-point lead into the second quarter. Mary held its own in the second quarter as CSM trailed 30-23 with 3:18 left in the quarter but a late 7-0 run squared the score at 30-30 at the half.

It was a fairly even third quarter as both teams scored just 12 points each. Heading into the final quarter the Marauders and Mines were tied 42-42.

With 2:49 left in the fourth quarter, the Mines took a commanding 61-54 lead but the Marauders weren't going to fold over that easily late in the final quarter.

Mary trimmed a seven point deficit in just under two minutes to tie the game at 61 all with 52 seconds left in the game. However, CSM went on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 66-61 with three seconds left and Williams nailed her fourth three pointer of the game at the buzzer but it was just a little too late for the Marauders.

Turnovers still seemed to be the Achilles Heal of the Marauders after committing 20 against the Mines. It was the second straight game that Mary committed 20-plus turnovers.

Rachel Weir finished with seven points for Mary as teammate Sawyer Kluge added six more of her own.

Cassie Askvig, Gabbie Bohl and Christal Hearn finished a combined 2-for-18 from the floor for the Blue & Orange.

The Marauders will play its final game of the tournament at 10:30 p.m. against No. California Baptist Sunday, Nov. 6.
