BISMARCK, ND – Fresh off a win Sunday against fellow newcomer Augustana, the University of Mary swim team hoped to make it a home sweep of the other new program in the Northern Sun. The Marauders fell just a little short, dropping a 142-117 decision to the University of Sioux Falls Cougars.
Meghan Mokhtary and
Brittany Davis picked up the Marauders two wins of the day as the Cougars claimed the other 12 races.
USF opened the meet with a win in the 400 yard medley relay and then captured the first four individual events.
Mohktary broke into the win column for the Marauders when she just edged Davis in the 100 yard breaststroke. The freshman from Rice, MN, posted a time of 1:10.64 while the freshman from Lexington Park, MD, was clocked in 1:11.08.
Two events later,
Karyssa Nelson barely fell short of capturing the 50 yard freestyle, checking in at 25.96 to the 24.79 posted by USF's Ingelin Lima.
In another battle between Davis and Mokhtary, it was Davis pulling ahead at the end in the 200 yard breaststroke 2:34.81 to 2:38.71. For Mokhtary, her time was about four seconds faster than her previous best.
The Marauders made a run in the last two individual events but found themselves taking second in both.
Elizabeth Moriarty was the runner-up in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.18.
In the narrowest margin of the day,
Alyssa Boese finished just .33 seconds behind Michelle Hoffin in the 200 yard individual medley. Boese finished with a time of 2:15.35 and shaved two full seconds off her best mark of the season.
After three straight home meets, the Marauders start a long stretch on the road, beginning with a meet in Aberdeen, SD, against Northern State University and the University of Minnesota Morris on Nov. 11. Mary makes its next – and final – home appearance on January 21.
