Mary Falls to #12 Pittsburg State, 70-38

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Cassie Askvig scored in double-figures for the second straight game but it wasn't enough as No. 12 Pittsburg State beat the University of Mary, 70-38 Friday, Nov. 11 at John Lance Arena.

A native of Minot, N.D., Askvig finished with a team-high 10 points, six rebounds and one assists as she went 3-for-6 from the field.

The Marauders (1-3) were outscored 49-25 in the final three quarters and shot 11 percent from beyond the arc in the loss.

The Gorillas (1-0) shot 42 percent from the floor and received a game-high 19 points from Mikaela Burgess in its 2016-2017 season opener.

Mary led 13-12 with 2:58 left in the first quarter but PSU closed out the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 21-13 lead into the second quarter.

Gabbie Bohl and Hannah Larson each scored a bucket in the second quarter for Mary but unfortunately that's the only points the Blue & Orange scored in the quarter as PSU outscored the Marauders 19-4 in the second quarter.

Mary trailed 40-17 at the half.

The second half was much closer as the Marauders were outscored just 30-21 but the five Gorillas scored in double-figures to help PSU secure the win.

PSU finished with 11 more second chance points and scored 36 points in the paint compared to Mary's 22.

The Marauders finished with 29 turnovers in the game and for the third time this season Mary committed 20-plus turnovers in a game.

Mary's leading scorer Dani Williams finished the game with two points but was 0-for-8 from the floor. Teammate Gabbie Bohl added nine points on 4-of-10 shooting and hauled down four rebounds.

Hannah Larson scored six points on 3-of-9 shooting but had a team-high six turnovers as Rachel Weird dished out three assists, scored four points, collected two steals and finished with four points on 2-of-4 shooting.

The Marauders are now 1-2 against ranked teams this season and will play a team Saturday, Nov. 12 that received votes in the 2016-2017 NCAA Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches' Poll in Washburn at 11 a.m.
