ST. CLOUD, MN – A second straight slow start led to a second straight setback for the University of Mary women's soccer team. St. Cloud State scored all its goals in the first half and defeated the visiting Marauders 3-1 in Northern Sun action.
While both teams managed 11 shots, the Huskies proved more accurate, pouring seven shots on frame to five for the Marauders.
Making her first career start, Mary's
Karleen Pappert faced heavy pressure early. The redshirt freshman posted three of her four saves in the first 18 minutes of play.
Maria Kass opened the scoring in the 26
th minute. Shortly after a corner kick, Kass scored her seventh goal of the season when she placed the ball in the right side of the goal off a pass from Audrey Clarno for a 1-0 Huskies lead.
Looking to knot the score, the Marauders instead were rebuffed when the Huskies defense blocked a shot by
Taylor Weeks and Julia Clifford saved a shot by Mary senior forward
Megan Searson.
On the counter attack, Kass again struck for the Huskies, this time doubling the SCSU lead with a shot into the left corner in the 38
th minute.
After another close miss by the Marauders, this time on a Clifford save of a
Michelle McGeary scoring attempt, the Huskies again quickly countered and tallied in the 41
st minute as Bares slipped a shot past Pappert.
Refusing to go away, the Marauders came out fast in the second half. After earning a corner kick, Mary scored when
Elizabeth Patterson pounced on a rebound in front of the goal and tucked the ball into the net in the 51
st minute. It was the junior defender's first goal of the season. Senior defender
Alexis Nahring registered the assist.
Mary continued to apply pressure but - despite a 7-4 second half advantage in shots – failed to net another goal.
Following three straight home games, the Marauders return home to face the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, Oct. 9. Game time at the MDU Resources Community Bowl is 1 PM for Mary's Breast Cancer Awareness Match.
