McGeary, Pappert lead Marauders to 1-1 draw with Bulldogs

BISMARCK, ND - A defensive struggle on a windy autumn day resulted in a 1-1 draw between the University of Mary women's soccer team and the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Marauders scored in the opening half, the Bulldogs in the second and neither could scratch out a goal in overtime.

Michelle McGeary opened the scoring in the 11th minute of play, taking advantage of a defensive miscue by the Bulldogs. With a Minnesota Duluth defender trying to play the ball back to their keeper, the Mary team captain raced between the Bulldogs backline and UMD goalkeeper Jordan Melby to scoop up the ball. After taking just a couple strides, McGeary fired the ball low past Melby into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Marauders advantage.

The McGeary goal, her third of the season, came on the first shot of the game for Mary.

The Bulldogs would draw even early in the second half. Skye Finley played the ball from right to left to Destiny Schmitz. Facing a wide-open goal from 10 yards out, the UMD sophomore placed the ball in the net at 51:17 for her first goal of the season.

Marauders goalkeeper Karleen Pappert kept the Bulldogs off the board the rest of the game. Making her second career start, the redshirt freshman faced five corner kicks by the Bulldogs. She punched a couple services out, made a save of one attempt bending into the goal, and had another save off a scramble.

Despite heavy pressure by Minnesota Duluth in the first extra session, the Mary defense held tight to force a second session. UMD held a 5-2 edge in shots in the first overtime and a 2-0 advantage in the second.

For the game, the Bulldogs held a 17-11 edge in shots but the Marauders held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. UMD held a massive 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Pappert finished with six saves for the Marauders, including three in overtime. Melby ended the day with seven stops, including five in the second half.

Mary is 1-6-3 overall on the season and 1-5-2. UMD is 5-4-3 and 3-3-3.

The Marauders remain at home and host Upper Iowa and Winona State on Oct. 15-16 for Parent/Family and Senior Recognition Weekend. Game time both days is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
