ABERDEEN, SD – Looking to damage the home team's postseason hopes, the visiting University of Mary women's soccer team instead dropped their final road game of the season 2-0 at Northern State University. Both Wolves goals were scored in a span of 129 seconds.
Already eliminated from postseason play, the Marauders looked to set back the playoff possibilities for the Wolves. With the win Northern State moved into a three-way tie for sixth place but still haven't clinched a spot in the Northern Sun tournament.
Both teams started fast. Northern State hit two crossbars in the first six minutes and
Hannah Smith denied the Wolves with a save on another scoring opportunity.
Michelle McGeary put one shot on frame and
Megan Searson missed wide as the Marauders also applied early pressure.
Using a corner kick, Northern State broke onto the board at 23:44 on Darian Leschewski's ninth goal of the season. Just 2:09 later, Leschewski struck from 40 yards out to double the Wolves lead to 2-0.
The Marauders controlled the offensive tempo the last ten minutes of the opening half, launching three corner kicks and forcing Wolves goalkeeper Stacy Cavill to make three saves with a fourth scoring attempt blocked by the defense.
Neither team managed to get into an offensive flow in the second half. While Smith had to make four of her six saves after intermission, Cavill made a save on the lone shot fired on goal by the Marauders.
The Wolves had a 22-13 edge in shots and a narrow 8-6 lead in shots on frame while also holding a 13-6 advantage in corner kicks.
McGeary took three shots for the Marauders to lead the squad and a had a couple on-target.
Mary closes out its 2016 schedule at home against MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Oct. 30, at 1 pm in the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
