Seniors lead Marauders to 3-0 win over Dragons in season finale

BISMARCK, ND – While it wasn't officially Senior Day at the University of Mary, the four Marauders seniors made sure the last game of the 2016 season ended with a win at home. Behind goals from seniors Alexis Nahring and Michelle McGeary, the Marauders shut down MSU Moorhead 3-0.

Fellow seniors Megan Searson and Elizabeth Heintzman also played key roles in the victory. Searson assisted on the third Marauders goal and attempted four shots and Hentzman made the Marauders only save of the day in over 80 minutes in net.

After a quiet start to the day with neither team finding an offensive flow, Nahring put the Marauders on the board first with her second counter of the season in the 21st minute of play.

Kylee Welch rushed the ball down the left flank and centered a pass to Nahring. Left alone, the Ramsey, MN, native took the feed just outside the 6-yard box, sidestepped past Dragons goalkeeper Reagan VonBerge and tapped the ball into the now-empty net.

The Marauders doubled their lead less than 13 minutes later. Kaelie Schumacher drew the MSUM defense to the middle of the field and laid the ball off to the left side for McGeary. Alone in space 15 yards from the net, the Mary team captain fired a shot headed for the upper right corner. Instead, McGeary's blast deflected off a defender and into the middle of the net at 33:03 for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Welch also picked up an assist on the goal, her second helper of the day.

Searson set up the Marauders final goal with a hard blast in the 62nd minute that VonBerge was unable to handle. The ball rolled a couple feet away to the feet of Kaycee Bailey and the junior defender took advantage, burying a shot into the net for her first career goal at Mary.

Defensively the Marauders smothered the Dragons offense. All four shot attempts for MSUM came from distance, including just one on frame as Heintzman and Hannah Smith combined for a clean sheet.

The Marauders held a 21-4 edge in shots on frame, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Mary took three corner kicks to two for MSUM. The Dragons committed more fouls 9-6.

Mary finishes the season 4-10-3 overall and 4-9-2 in the Northern Sun. MSUM is 3-14 and 2-13.
