Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Martin goal highlight of Marauders loss to #11 Beavers

MINOT, ND – Patricia Martin scored her second goal of the season for the University of Mary women's soccer team but the Marauders were unable to overcome a pair of early goals in a 6-1 road loss to Northern Sun-leading Minot State University.

A forward from Helena, MT, in her first year at Mary, Martin is the Marauders leading scorer among freshmen. She is also tied for second on the team in goals.

Facing the 11th ranked team in the country, the Marauders fell behind early. Just 4:14 into the match, Dalia Tapia's long, floating kick just went over the outstretched fingers of Mary goalkeeper Elizabeth Heintzman for a 1-0 Beavers lead.

Minot State doubled its lead in the 17th minute when Chloe Melton knocked home a rebound off a Ninfa Ramirez shot stopped by Heintzman. The Marauders defense then buckled down the rest of the half, allowing just one more shot on frame to remain two goals down at intermission.

The Marauders tested Beavers goalie Erin Rafferty with the first two shots on goal of the second half but couldn't break onto the scoreboard. The Beavers responded with three goals in a span of less than six minutes to ensure at least a share of the Northern Sun title, with two goals coming just 59 seconds apart in the 61st and 62nd minutes.

Martin combined with Caylin Cathey to score the Marauders lone goal. Cathey, who tallied twice against Minnesota State on Sunday, put a ball in space between defenders in position for Martin to deliver the counter.

The Marauders (3-9-3 overall / 3-8-2 NSIC) were outshot 20-10 in the game, though the shots on goal tally was just 9-6 in favor of the Beavers (13-1-1 / 12-0-1).

Wrapping up their four-game road trip at Northern State University on Friday, Oct. 28, the Marauders close out the regular season at home against MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Oct. 30.
