Cathey strikes twice in narrow Marauders loss to Mavericks

MANKATO, MN – Caylin Cathey tallied twice for the University of Mary but a pair of two-goal deficits proved too much for the Marauders to overcome in a narrow 4-3 loss at Minnesota State University.

The Mavericks, currently second in the Northern Sun standings, opened the scoring with the first two goals of the game. Dana Savino scored in the 11th minute and Jenny Hoerter doubled the Mavericks lead at 26:41.

Scoring her first goal of the game and the season, Cathey cut the Marauders deficit in half in the 36th minute after taking a feed from Alexis Nahring.

Continuing to press on offense, Michelle McGeary knotted the game early in the second half. The senior captain scored her fifth goal of the season in the 52nd minute with Emily Julian providing an assist.

After an inopportune foul inside the box was whistled against the Marauders, the Mavericks regained their lead on a successful penalty kick by Kiana Nickel at 62:51. Less than four minutes later, Minnesota State gained its second two-goal advantage of the game on Hoerter's second goal.

Refusing to go away, the Marauders pulled within 4-3 on Cathey's second goal, this one at 78:57. As she had on the McGeary goal, Julian provided the assist.

Minnesota State went back on the attack, running out time and taking three shots, the final one saved by Mary goalkeeper Karleen Pappert.

The Marauders made one final run at forcing extra time but couldn't find the equalizer. Lisa Swärdh twice fired shots on goal in the final three minutes but both times Alexa Rabune made the save.

The three goals by the Marauders is a season-high. It came against a Mavericks defense that had allowed just one goal in its previous seven games.

The Mavericks held a 22-12 edge in shots attempted though both teams placed eight shots on frame. Mary committed 18 fouls to 14 for Minnesota State. The Mavericks generated 11 corner kicks to two for the Marauders.

A four-game road trip continues for the Marauders when Mary plays at Minot State on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in a game rescheduled from earlier this season after the Beavers field was declared unplayable due to construction issues.
