Mustangs race past Marauders

MARSHALL, MN – Unable to stem an offensive onslaught by homestanding Southwest Minnesota State University, the University of Mary women's soccer team saw its two-game unbeaten streak halted in a 5-1 loss to the Mustangs.

While Mary had a 15-11 edge in shots attempted in the game, including an 8-7 first half advantage, Southwest Minnesota State scored the first three goals of the game and led 4-1 at intermission. Spreading the wealth, five different players scored for SMSU.

The Mustangs Emily Hiddleston opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play and assisted on Emily Hofmann's goal in the 16th minute for a 2-0 SMSU lead. Hofmann then assisted on Morgan Weyer-Coates counter in the 30th minute.

Late in the opening half, Emily Julian put the Marauders on the board at 38:40 on an unassisted goal, her first of the season. Mary's hopes of staying within a manageable deficit of two goals at intermission went by the wayside when Southwest Minnesota scored its fourth goal just 2:08 later.

The second half remained scoreless until SMSU tallied with 20 seconds left to play in the game.

Seeing her first extended action of the year, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Karleen Pappert played the second half and made two saves for the Marauders, keeping the Mustangs off the board until the game's waning moments.

Julian came off the bench for the Marauders and tied Michelle McGeary for the team lead in shots attempted and on frame. Both had four scoring chances and placed two shots on goal.

In the midst of three straight road games, the Marauders next play at St. Cloud State on Friday, Oct. 7, before hosting Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, Oct. 9.
