DULUTH, Minn. – With second place in the Northern Sun North Division on the line between the University of Mary and the University of Minnesota Duluth and both teams in the middle of a losing streak, the homestanding Bulldogs turned up the tempo and ran away with a 100-76 win over the Marauders.
The win for the Bulldogs snapped UMD's three game losing streak and keeps them in second place in the NSIC North, two games ahead of U-Mary. UMD is 14-6 overall and 10-4 in the Northern Sun. The Marauders slip to 13-7 and 8-6. Despite a fifth straight loss, U-Mary remains third in the NSIC North and fifth overall.
For the second straight game,
Marquealis Edwards led the Marauders in scoring, leading a balanced U-Mary attack with 17 points. Five different Marauders reached double digit points in the game.
While the U-Mary offense found balance, the UMD scoring was top heavy. Pierre Newton and Taylor Lavery both scored 26 points and Brendon Pineda chipped in 17. The trio combined to make 21-of-36 field goals and 19-of-26 free throws. Newton added 12 rebounds while Lavery hit 5-of-11 3-point attempts.
Overall the Bulldogs shot 57.1 percent, including a 13-of-28 effort behind the arc. The 100 points was the most allowed by the Marauders this season. The Marauders hit just 43.1 percent of their shots and went 5-of-18 on 3-point attempts.
Edwards opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, the first of two treys for the U-Mary senior guard. It was the only lead of the night for the Marauders. Kyle Schalow knotted the game for UMD with a 3-pointer before Newton connected on a three point play after being fouled hitting a jump shot for a 6-3 Bulldogs lead.
A
Damonta Henry 3-pointer later tied the game at 26-26 before the Bulldogs went back on the attack to build a 47-36 lead at intermission. The deficit grew to as many as 30 points in the second half.
Issac Lindquist added 14 points for the Marauders.
Bryan Jefferson and
Rickey Suggs added 11 points and
Brandon Tyler had 10.
The Marauders continue their four-game road swing next weekend when U-Mary visits NSIC-leading Augustana and Wayne State College on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 30-31.
