U-Mary Resumes NSIC Schedule with Duals Against SMSU, Augie

THIS WEEK: The University of Mary Wrestling team resumes the conference portion of their schedule as they head out on the road to Marshall, Minn., to take on Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, January 23, before paying a visit to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on Augustana University on Sunday, January 24.

HISTORY: U-Mary dropped a tough matchup to both opponents as the Mustangs easily handled the Marauders in a 28-15 dual score, despite a 6-3 decision from Paul Michaelson, a 14-2 major decision from Riley Nagel, a 12-2 major decision from John DeVito, and a 10-2 major decision from Tom DeVito. The Marauders then had their hands full with the Vikings as Augustana took every bout that mattered in the 40-6 team win, and U-Mary's lone win came as a forfeit at 285 pounds to Jonah Westbury.

LAST WEEK: The Marauders had a successful trip down to Kearney, Neb., as they competed in the Midwest Duals after going 0-4 in last year's outing. The final results favored U-Mary for the most part as they got team wins over New Mexico Highlands University and Newman University at 24-21 and 24-19, respectively. Tate Barnhardt, Rudy Guillen, Paul Michaelson, and Travis Smith all finished with winning records on the day with Barnhardt at a perfect 4-0 with three decisions and a tech fall. Guillen was not far off as he earned a tech fall as well to go with a major decision and a decision, Michaelson earned a decision and a forfeit before giving up a major decision, and Smith rounded out the day with a pin, a major decision and two forfeits in his favor. Unfortunately, the Marauders fell before Colorado School of Mines at 21-18, and Chadron State College at 24-13.

BARNCAT TOUGH: Tate Barnhardt was named U-Mary's Barncat Tough Wrestler of the Week as he went a perfect 4-0 during the Midwest Duals to help power the Marauders to a 2-2 record and improve to 5-8 on the year. Barnhardt started off his run with a 9-3 decision over Noah Au-Yeung from Colorado Mines, followed that up with a 21-6 tech fall over Tre Humphrey from New Mexico Highlands, kept the momentum going with an 8-6 decision over Taylor Summers from Chadron State, and capped off his day with an 8-2 over Jake Gentzler from Newman. On the year, Barnhardt owns a 20-7 record with 11 wins coming by fall, two by major decision, and two by tech fall. He powers his way through opponents with 49 takedowns, second on the team, 25 escapes, two reversals, nine nearfall-twos, and seven nearfall-fours.

NEXT WEEK: The Marauders will return home for their toughest dual of the year as they play host to #2 St. Cloud State University on Saturday, January 30, at 7:00 PM. The Huskies currently own an 8-1 dual record on the year and will have their first NSIC duals of the year during this weekend.
