U-Mary Drops Season Opener 2-1 to Maryville

DES MOINES, Iowa - As the 2015 gets underway, the University of Mary Men's Soccer team paid a visit to Iowa to compete in the 2015 Soccer Jamboree with the first match of the year coming against Maryville University.
 
The Marauders (0-1) were able to draw first blood but couldn't hold onto the lead as the Saints (1-0) came away with a 2-1 victory.
 
U-Mary laid the pressure on early with two quick shots on goal in the first six minutes of the match and found purchase when James Liddiard took a pass from Jordan Pearce and drove a shot into the back of the net to give the Marauders a 1-0 advantage.
 
The Saints didn't take much time to respond as Nate Alonzo took the ball on his own and scored the equalizer in the 35th minute to knot the score at 1-1 heading into halftime.
 
The second half told a different tale as Maryville took the lead in the 50th minute when Pontus Gitselov took a pass from Nico Andrade and put the Saints ahead with a shot into the net that gave Maryville a 2-1 lead. U-Mary had the opportunity to even the score as they had six shots on goal through the rest of the match, but goalkeeper Christi Kjaersgaard stopped every attempt that the Marauders took.
 
U-Mary ended the first day on the downside of a 2-1 score.
 
Christoffer Nogueira led the charge on the offensive end of the pitch as he had five shots, all on goal, but couldn't find one to sneak past the Saints' goalkeeper.
 
Liddiard's lone goal came on three shots, all on goal, while Pearce registered two shots and one assist.
 
Ludvig Rhodin earned the start in the net as he spent all 90 minutes in the keeper's box while making five saves.
 
The Marauders will have one more match in the Jamboree on Sunday against the University of Illinois-Springfield.
