Box Score SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – In a shootout between two teams seeking their first Northern Sun win of the season, the University of Mary suffered a heart wrenching 4-3 loss at the University of Sioux Falls when the Cougars scored a golden goal deep in the second overtime.
Struggling to score this year, the Marauders took their first lead of the season with a pair of goals in the span of 55 seconds late in the opening haf. Down 1-0,
Elizabeth Patterson knotted the contest at 42:04 when she knocked home a rebound of a
Michelle McGeary shot.
A pair of freshmen combined to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead at 42:59. After
Emily Julian's initial shot was stopped,
Caylin Cathey gobbled up the ball just off the goal line and fired it into the net for her first collegiate counter.
A mistake by the Marauders (0-5-1 overall, 0-4 NSIC) allowed the Cougars (2-4-0, 1-3-0) to pull even early in the second half when Alexandria Scott converted a penalty kick in the 49
th minute.
The Marauders forged a lead off a Cougars miscue in the 67
th minute when
Megan Searson drove a free kick into the net for her third goal of the season. Searson has scored on two penalty kicks and once on a free kick this year.
Looking to finish strong, the Marauders withstood late pressure from the Cougars when
Kelsey Ekstedt posted two saves in the 83
rd minute and survived a USF corner kick in the 84
th minute.
The tables turned just moments later. Patterson just missed her second goal of the night for U-Mary as her shot clanged off the crossbar at 86:00. The Cougars countered immediately as Lola Weiss scored over the top of Ekstedt from 20 yards out at 86:18 to tie the game 3-3. USF tried to finish the game in regulation but a save by Ekstedt and a second Cougars shot wide left brought on overtime.
McGeary nearly ended the game 22 seconds into overtime but Morgan Perkins came up with the save. McGeary had another chance to score in the 98
th minute but missed wide left. Her two attempts were the only shots taken by either team in the first extra stanza.
As in the first overtime, U-Mary was the aggressor early in the second. The Marauders were unable to convert on a corner kick and Julian had a shot blocked. Another shot by Julian was saved by Perkins in the 106
th minute.
Finally able to counter, Sioux Falls made its only shot in overtime count when Alexa D'Acunto knocked the game-winner into the top left corner of the goal from eight yards out at 106:08.
The Marauders held a 26-16 edge in shots, including a 14-12 edge in shots on frame. U-Mary also took 11 corner kicks to four for Sioux Falls.
U-Mary concludes a six-game road trip at Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday, Sept. 27.
