CROOKSTON, Minn. – Despite pressing the action offensively much of the game, the University of Mary women's soccer team was unable to penetrate the University of Minnesota Crookston defense in a 2-0 Marauders road loss to the Golden Eagles.
The Marauders (0-4-1 overall / 0-3-0 Northern Sun) held a 14-8 edge in shots and a 5-3 advantage in shots on frame over the Golden Eagles (1-4-1/ 1-2-0). Despite the edge in scoring opportunities for U-Mary, it was UMC that found the net and earned its first victory of the season.
The Golden Eagles had the first scoring opportunity of the game but were unable to find the net on a header generated from a corner kick. Following a brief flurry from the Marauders where a
Megan Searson shot was stopped by goalkeeper Lexie Gauger and
Jade Smith's attempt went wide, the Golden Eagles created their second and final corner kick of the day.
After U-Mary blocked a shot out of play, Delaney McIntyre served a ball across the box that Courtney Armborst headed into the net in the 30
th minute for a 1-0 Golden Eagles lead.
Pushing to tie the game before intermission, the Marauders generated four shots. One went wide, another was blocked, and Gauger recorded saves on attempts by
Nicole Wolfer and Searson.
Following two U-Mary scoring attempts early in the second half, Minnesota Crookston countered and scored at 52:12 on a Lorna McCall goal from 40 feet out off McIntyre's second assist of the game.
After both teams misfired on scoring attempts, the Marauders just missed getting on the board when a
Jacquelyn Smith shot hit the crossbar in the 73
rd minute. Less than a minute later,
Michelle McGeary missed high. The Golden Eagles defense then took over, holding the Marauders without a shot attempt for the remainder of the match.
Searson led the Marauders attack with four shot, including three on frame. McGeary added three shots and Smith and Wolfer both managed two.
The Marauders conclude a six game road trip next weekend with games at the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State University on Sept. 26-27.
