Marauders Sink Seasiders in Thanksgiving Opener, 53-45

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Making the most out of their Thanksgiving trip, the University of Mary Women's Basketball team took on Brigham Young University-Hawaii today for the start of the Hawaii Thanksgiving Classic.

Hannah Larson led the way for the Marauders (4-2) as she recorded her second double-double of the year in a 53-45 win over the Seasiders (3-1), extending U-Mary's winning streak to four games.

The two teams traded baskets to start off the first quarter, BYU-Hawaii notched the first points of the game on a quick jumper at 8:37 but Brittney Dietz responded quickly with a shot from beyond the arc to get the Marauders on the board. The back-and-forth affair continued through the entire frame as the Seasiders held the advantage at 13-11 at the end of the period.

BYU-Hawaii kept the cushion early in the second quarter at 17-13, but U-Mary found the right combination as they recorded a 13-2 run thanks to six points from Larson, three from Dani Clarke, and two each from Dietz and Dani Williams to take the lead over at 26-19 with 1:50 remaining in the half. The Seasiders would snap the run to close out the quarter as they recorded the final four points of the half on back-to-back layups to close the gap down to 26-23 in favor of U-Mary going into the break.

The teams once again traded baskets to begin the third quarter that carried the game to a 31-29 score favoring the Marauders midway through the quarter, but U-Mary closed the quarter out on a 10-2 run in the final 3:26 off four points from Dietz, three from Williams, and three from Haley Hibbs to set the score at 41-31 heading into the final quarter.

The Seasiders fought their way back to narrow the score down to 42-35 with 8:26 to go in the fourth quarter, and U-Mary responded in kind by extending their lead back out to 11 with two quick buckets from Larson and Hayley Niles with 6:23 remaining. BYU-Hawaii fired off three quick baskets to cut U-Mary's lead back down to 46-41 with 5:02 to go, but Williams fired off a shot from beyond the arc to halt the run and the Marauders cruised the rest of the way to an eventual 53-45 victory.
