Career Marks from Weir and Dietz Power Marauders Past Silverswords

LAIE, Hawaii - Brittney Dietz recorded her fourth career 30-point game, Rachel Weir scored a career high 22 points, and Hannah Larson notched her third double-double of the season as the University of Mary Women's Basketball team took on Chaminade University on the second day of the Thanksgiving Classic.

The scoring output from the three powered the Marauders (5-2) over the Silverswords (0-3), as U-Mary won their fifth game in a row in convincing fashion at 88-55.

The Silverswords recorded the first basket of the game with a three-pointer at the 9:25 mark, but U-Mary responded quickly with seven straight points thanks to four from Dietz, two from Isabel Schmelzer, and a made free throw from Larson to take the lead at 7-3 at the 7:39 mark of the first quarter. The Marauders extended their lead out to 12-5 with 5:46 remaining, but Chaminade quickly cut the lead down to 14-10 at 4:45, and eventually tied the game at 16-16 with 3:18 to go in the quarter.

The Marauders snapped the scoring drought thanks to three quick points from Weir, and kept the Silverswords at bay through the remainder of the quarter with seven of the final 10 points to put U-Mary on top at 23-19 heading into the second quarter.

Chaminade opened up the second quarter with a brief 7-0 run to retake the lead at 26-23 at the 7:50 mark, but Hayley Niles provided the response with a quick three-pointer, followed by a layup from Larson, to give U-Mary the lead once again at 28-26 with 6:32 to go in the quarter. The Silverswords kept the score close as they tied it at 28-28, but the Marauder's offense took over and fired off a 14-4 run to close the half thanks to 10 points from Weir, three from Dietz, and one from Schmelzer to extend U-Mary's lead out to 42-32 heading into halftime.

The Marauders matched the Silverswords basket-for-basket to start off the third quarter as U-Mary held a 46-37 lead at the 7:46 mark, but a 12-2 run coming from five different Marauders extended the lead out to 58-39 with 4:31 remaining in the frame. The final minutes of the half came down to U-Mary maintaining the cushion as they held a 70-45 lead heading into the final period.

U-Mary built their lead up to 30 points at the start of the fourth quarter, capped off by a classic three-point play from Dani Williams from a layup and free throw at 7:28, and the Marauders coasted the rest of the way as starters were subbed out within the next few minutes and U-Mary secured their fifth win of the season with an 88-55 final score.

Brittney Dietz finished the game with 30 points, her fourth career game with at least 30, on 9-for-19 shooting, including an 11-for-14 mark from the charity stripe; she also added four rebounds, four assists and two steals in 30 minutes of action.

Hannah Larson recorded her second double-double in a row, third on the season, with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and one block in 24 minutes played.

Rachel Weir recorded 22 of U-Mary's 38 bench points on 8-for-10 shooting from the field, 4-for-6 from the charity stripe, to go with seven rebounds and one block in 19 minutes on the floor.

Dani Williams was a ball magnet in the game as she grabbed 12 rebounds, which is a career best, along with three points and one assist in 27 minutes on the court.

The Marauders return home next week as they open up the conference portion of the schedule with a game against Northern State University on Friday, December 4, starting at 6:00 PM at the McDowell Activity Center.
