BISMARCK, N.D. – A stunning conclusion to an exciting contest left the University of Mary women's soccer team on the short end of the score. Winona State University knocked in a rebound off a penalty kick early in the second overtime for the only goal in a 1-0 Warriors win over the Marauders.
After the Marauders couldn't connect on a corner kick in the second extra stanza, the Warriors quickly countered with a long pass to Abby Bohanski. The Warriors leading goal scorer gathered the ball in the Marauders defensive half of the field and drove towards the U-Mary goal. Marauders goalkeeper
Bailey Wenz came out of the net to challenge Bohanski just inside the penalty box. Unable to knock the ball away from the Winona State forward as she made a move to the middle of the field, Wenz instead knocked Bohanski to the turf and was whistled for a foul on the breakaway.
With a penalty kick awarded to Winona State and Wenz banished to the bench with a red card,
Kelsey Ekstedt was summoned to protect the Marauders goal. Chosen to take the penalty kick for the Warriors, Mehan Bolton drove her shot towards the lower left corner, the same corner Ekstedt dove towards to protect. Guessing correctly, U-Mary's sophomore goalkeepeqr made a spectacular save but Bolton beat the Marauders defenders to the ball and shot it from left to right for the golden goal at 101:28 of the game.
After a relatively quiet first half, the Warriors (7-3 overall / 4-3 Northern Sun) began pressuring the Marauders (1-8-1 / 1-6 NSIC) late in the second. In the last 20 minutes of regulation, Wenz made three saves and faced five shots and two corner kicks. During one flurry, Wenz made a nice save on a point blank shot and
Alexis Nahring cleared a ball off the goal line.
The Warriors continued their attack early in overtime, forcing Wenz to make two saves early in the first extra session.
Wenz finished the game with six saves and Ekstedt added one.
Winona State held a 17-7 edge in shots with a 7-1 advantage in shots on frame. WSU also took eight corner kicks to four for U-Mary.
Following this weekend homestand, the Marauders next visit Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State University on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11.
