First Half Goal Flurry Sends Marauders to Defeat

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A 14-game unbeaten streak against Concordia-St. Paul ended for the University of Mary as the Golden Bears knocked off the Marauders 3-1 in Northern Sun women's soccer.

U-Mary entered the road game with 13 wins and a tie all-time against the Golden Bears.

Looking to set an early tone, the Marauders just missed striking first when Emily Julian's shot hit the crossbar less than three minutes into the contest.

Concordia quickly countered. McKenzie Buck broke through the Marauders defense and rolled a ball past goalkeeper Kelsey Ekstedt in the fifth minute for a 1-0 Golden Bears lead.

The match continued its full-throttle pace. Following a U-Mary corner kick, the Marauders fired five shots in the next dozen minutes while the Golden Bears managed three of their own.

The Marauders pulled even in the 23rd minute when all-conference midfielder Michelle McGeary found the net for the first time this season. Taking a pass from Julian on the left side, McGeary scored from five yards out.

Quickly the Golden Bears snatched back the lead. Chelsie Lindsey, who assisted on Concordia's opening goal of the game, headed the ball into the net off a corner kick for her third counter of the season.

Concordia doubled its lead just before intermission as Kaitlyn Halvorson scored in the 43rd minute from eight yards out.

The Marauders continued to attack throughout the second half but could never solve the Golden Bears defense. U-Mary ripped off 10 shots with four on frame after intermission. Ekstedt made three saves for the Marauders and Emma Gartner had six for the Golden Bears.

For the game, both teams managed 19 shots with U-Mary placing seven on frame to six for Concordia. The Golden Bears had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks while the Marauders were whistled for 14 fouls to nine for the home team.

U-Mary continues is last weekend road trip of the season with a visit to #6 Minnesota State University on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m.
