BISMARCK, N.D. – For the second straight day, the end came abruptly for the University of Mary women's soccer team. Playing one of their best games of the season against one of the nation's top teams, the Marauders tumbled 2-1 to 25
th ranked Augustana on a golden goal 1:44 into the initial extra stanza.
This was the second overtime loss of the weekend for U-Mary and the team's third straight game that needed extra time. The Marauders dropped a 4-3 decision to Wayne State College in double overtime on Saturday. For the season the Marauders are 0-4-2 when games are decided after regulation.
A defensive game early, the two teams combined for only one shot on frame over the first 54 minutes.
The Vikings soon began pressing the action. After missing on a header attempt off a corner kick, Augie regrouped and scored the opening goal of the game in the 61
st minute. Stephanie Stevens played a ball from the left side in the air to Samantha Tymkowicz, who headed the pass into the center of the net for her 12
th goal this season.
Showing patience, the Marauders retaliated with only 6:34 remaining in the game.
Megan Searson played a ball forward left perfectly to the feet of
Mykala Benjamin. The senior striker gathered the pass less than 15 yards from in front of the net and rolled it into the left corner of the goal. It was her second goal of the weekend and fourth on the season.
Needing a win to remain in sole possession of second place in the Northern Sun and a victory out of first, Augustana quickly crashed the U-Mary net in overtime. Kristen Smith carried the ball deep to the end line left of the Marauders goal and attempted to center a shallow angle crossing pass. Marauders goalkeeper
Kelsey Ekstedt went down to corral the ball but it was struck too hard for her to handle and squirted towards the center of the net. Tymkowicz swooped in and tapped the loose ball home for the winning goal. It was also her second counter of the day and 13
th overall.
Augie had slight edges in shots (11-9) and shots on frame (6-2) and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
Benjamin took three shots for the Marauders and had both shots on goal. Tymkowicz took four shots for the Vikings with three on frame.
Ekstedt had four saves for U-Mary.
The Marauders next visit Northern State University on Friday, Oct. 30, before closing out the season at home on Nov. 1 against MSU Moorhead.
