BISMARCK , N.D. – A freewheeling back-and-forth contest between two teams with nothing to lose ended abruptly in the second overtime. Visiting Wayne State College scored just 51 seconds in the final stanza of the day to edge the University of Mary 4-3 and overshadow a career day from Marauders defender
Jacquelyn Smith.
A senior from Lewiston, Idaho, Smith scored a goal and added an assist for U-Mary. The goal was just the second of her career – the first since her freshman season – and the assist was her first ever for the Marauders.
Mykala Benjamin started the scoring with her third goal in three games for the Marauders (2-10-2 overall / 2-9-1 NSIC) just 6:43 into the game. Taking a thru ball from
Michelle McGeary, the senior split a pair of defenders to come in alone on the Wildcats (3-9-3 / 3-8-1) goalkeeper. The Kent, Wash., native shot the ball into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 U-Mary lead.
The Wildcats tallied twice to take a 2-1 lead at intermission. Wayne State first connected in the 31
st minute on a header by Karlee Hall off a corner kick from Kelsey Engstrom. Fighting though the crowd, Hall headed the ball just under the crossbar to knot the game.
Wayne State took its first lead on a defensive miscue by U-Mary in the 42
nd minute. With a Marauders defender and goalkeeper converging on the ball at about the penalty kick marker, Valerie Hernandez put a toe on the ball and rolled it slowly into the goal.
The Marauders scrambled to knot the game. After Wildcats goalkeeper Kylie Comba bobbled the ball off a Marauders free kick, U-Mary knocked the ball off the right post. The ball caromed to the left side of the net to Smith for the tap-in at 51:09.
Less than four minutes later Wayne State regained the lead on a goal by Engstrom.
Turning the ball back to Smith, the Marauders found a way to once again pull even. Taking a free kick from 40 yards out, Smith served a perfect ball in front of the Wildcats net. Sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Patterson carved out space inside the goal box and scored her first goal of the season on a header just beneath the crossbar to tie the game 3-3 at 62:41.
Neither team could find a goal for the remainder of regulation or the first overtime. Wayne State served three corner kicks in the first overtime and U-Mary took one but no one could connect.
The end came quick in the second overtime. Christina Stasi received a forward pass on the right side and was able to drive inside the Marauders defender. Alone with Marauders goalkeeper
Bailey Wenz, Stasi scored the golden goal from 15 yards out just 51 seconds into the second extra session.
U-Mary held a 15-11 edge in shots and a 6-5 margin in shots on goal. Wayne State had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks while the Marauders was called for 12 fouls to eight for the Wildcats.
Benjamin managed a game-high six shots for U-Mary, including three on goal.
The Marauders close Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 25, against #25 Augustana. Game time is 1 p.m. at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
