Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – From a scoreless first half to wide open play in the second stanza, the University of Mary women's soccer team was nudged 2-1 by MSU Billings in the season opener for both teams.
Neither team could find the net in the first half but both had several opportunities. With the Yellowjackets (1-0 overall) goalkeeper out of position 12 minutes into the game, Marauders (0-1) freshman
Katie Berg took a shot inside the penalty box but an MSUB defender stopped the attempt on the goal line. Less than a minute later, Dana Lubieniecki of MSUB hit the post to keep the game scoreless.
The visiting Yellowjackets found the net first. Alisa Sagdahl served a perfect corner kick in front of the Marauders net that teammate Haley McFarlane headed into the goal in the 56
th minute.
It took the Marauders just nine minutes to retaliate. Senior forward
Andrea Muller knocked home a loose ball for an unassisted goal to even the score at 1-1.
Alisa Sagdahl used a defensive breakdown by the Marauders to score the winning goal at the 80:35 mark. Taking a feed from Jennifer Johnson, Sagdahl found herself unattended in front of the Marauders net for an easy counter.
MSU Billings held a 14-5 edge in total shots with a 7-3 advantage in shots on frame. The Yellowjackets also had a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Making her first collegiate start,
Kelsey Ekstedt proved solid in net. The redshirt freshman made five stops for U-Mary.
U-Mary returns to action on Sept. 11 when the Marauders host Central Missouri. Game time is 6 p.m. at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
