Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Jon Montoya

Men's Soccer Senior Day Ends in Loss to St. Martin's

BISMARCK, N.D. – A testy match between the Marauders and the Saints ended up with U-Mary on the losing side today. The Marauders struck first but couldn't keep the momentum going in the second half and eventually fell 3-1 to St. Martin's.

The match started out slow for both teams as neither could gain any ground in front of the net. Around 19:55 Christoffer Nogueira took the ball up the far sideline, hit a cross in front of the net, and a Cole Olson header struck gold for the Marauders to get on the board first 1-0.

The Saints responded a few minutes later at 25:34 after a corner kick bounced around in front of the Marauder goal and was eventually kicked in by St. Martin's. U-Mary had a few more opportunities through the remainder of the first half with a corner kick and a few shots going wide. The Saints, however, went ahead at 44:26 when another shot found the back of the net and carried the 2-1 lead into the half.

U-Mary had a chance to tie the game early in the second half after a yellow card on the Saints goalkeeper gave the Marauders a penalty shot. Unfortunately the penalty was save by the same goalkeeper and the Marauders stayed on the defensive. St. Martin's kept the pressure up through most of the second half, firing off a handful of shots before netting a third goal at 75:36 to extend the lead to two goals.  The Marauders got off a few more shots but couldn't find paydirt and lost the game 3-1.

Olson had the lone goal for the Marauders with the assist coming from Nogueira. U-Mary fired off eight shots with five shots on goal.

Michael Frenzel got the start in the net and ended the game with five saves.

Jack West, Logan Christensen, Aaron Mc Elwee, and Michael Frenzel were honored before the game on Marauders Senior Day.

U-Mary (2-2-1, 1-2-0 GNAC) will head out on the road next week to take on Montana State University-Billings on Thursday, October 2, in Billings, Mont., before heading to Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday, October 4 to take on Northwest Nazarene.
