BILLINGS, MONT. – The Marauders kept pace with the Yellowjackets through the first half, but Montana State University-Billings got the last word with a go-ahead goal in the 58th minute to give U-Mary their third straight loss in conference.
The Yellowjackets struck first midway through the first half with a goal coming at 22:18 after a long run from Zach Lempa down the sideline ended with a cross in front of the box and found the back of the net off a jab from David Loeung.
The Marauders responded not long after that when
Aaron Brennan crossed the ball into the box and a quick strike from
Aaron Mc Elwee got U-Mary on the board with a 1-1 tie.
Coming out of halftime, U-Mary had back-to-back opportunities when
Christoffer Nogueira had his attempt go high, followed by a corner from
Brad Kelly about a minute later leading to a shot from
Alex Boyes that was saved by the MSU-Billings keeper.
The Yellowjackets went ahead at 57:16 after a through pass from Sam Butterworth snuck by some defenders into the possession of Nicklas Schregel and found the back of the net.
U-Mary had plenty of opportunities to tie the game with seven shots and two corners coming after the go-ahead goal, but MSU-Billings would hold on to win the match.
Mc Elwee's goal came on his only shot of the game, while Brennan turned out to be incredibly active as he finished with five shots and two shots on goal.
Michael Frenzel got the start in the net and finished the game with three saves, keeping the match close for the Marauders.
U-Mary (2-3-1, 1-3-0 GNAC) will head to Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday, October 4 to take on Northwest Nazarene in another Great Northern matchup.
