Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, S.D. – Despite two strong performances by the University of Mary starting pitchers, the Marauders were unable to take advantage in a pair of losses at Northern State University. The Marauders were edged 4-3 in the opener before a last inning surge pushed the Wolves to 13-3 win in game two. Both games were tied 3-3 late in each contest.
Zach Steckler and Nick Stobbe both pitched six solid innings for the Marauders with each allowing just six hits. Steckler was touched for four runs in a complete game effort in game one while Stobbe gave up just three runs in the second contest.
Down 3-1 in the opening game, the Marauders used miscues by the Wolves and a run-scoring single by
Dwight Mack to knot the game in the third.
Northern State won the game with one out in the fifth when Rocky Rocamora hit a home run on a 3-1 pitch from Steckler.
Austin Grundstad went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the U-Mary attack. Clayton Nutting and Rocamora both were 2-for-3 for NSU.
Cody Johns pitched a seven-inning complete game for the Wolves, allowing six hits and no earned runs while striking out six. Steckler walked four and struck out two for the Marauders.
Finding themselves in the same situation as in the opener, the Marauders scored twice in the seventh inning of game two to tie the contest 3-3. An
Alex Deyle single scored one run and Deyle came around to score on a Wolves error.
The tight contest quickly turned to a rout as the Wolves scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to end the contest prematurely. Facing three U-Mary pitchers, Northern State pounded out nine hits and eventually scored the final run of the day on a wild pitch.
Deyle posted two of the team's six hits, scored once and drove in a run for U-Mary. Rocamora led NSU with three hits. Matt Stubbs scored three runs and Alex Cornwell homered, tallied twice and drove in three.
James Georakas allowed one run in six innings on four hits with a walk and a strikeout for the Wolves.
U-Mary is 15-31 overall and 6-20 in the NSIC. Northern State is 27-14 and 20-10.
