Box Score 2 BISMARCK, N.D. –
Sam Ingemansen drove in a career-high four runs and posted three extra base hits in an opening game win to propel the University of Mary to a Northern Sun doubleheader split with the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Marauders captured the opener 7-3 before the Bulldogs responded with a 6-5 decision in a 14-inning marathon.
Ingemansen hit two doubles and one triple in three at bats in the opening game. The Marauders senior catcher also scored twice while registering four RBI. The 3-for-3 effort at the plate ties his career-best mark for hits in a game. His third triple of the year ties him for the U-Mary high.
The Marauders exploded for five runs in the second inning of the opener. Following a run-scoring single to right by
Mason Schiff, Ingemansen roped a three-run triple to right field.
Alex Deyle followed with a single to right center to score Ingemansen with the final run of the inning.
After three strong innings to open the game, the Bulldogs (8-19 overall, 4-13 Northern Sun) touched Marauders (11-23. 6-12) starting pitcher
Shane Trattles with three runs in the fourth inning. The U-Mary senior settled back into a groove and pitched a perfect fifth inning and a scoreless sixth before being replaced in the seventh by
Zach Steckler.
U-Mary would back Trattles with two more runs, a
Jason Shaul RBI single in the fifth and a run-scoring double by Ingemansen in the sixth.
Derek Somerville matched Ingemansen in the hit column, finishing 3-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. He also stole his 12
th base of the season.
Andrew Beyer finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks.
Trattles struck out four and limited the Bulldogs to six hits, two walks, and three runs in six innings. Steckler finished the game by tossing a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
Alex Wojciechowski was 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Bulldogs. Beau Goff also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the second game with a single run in the first but the Marauders responded with solo runs in both the third and fourth innings. A Deyle single through the right side scored
Mason Schiff to tie the game before Shaul scored on a passed ball.
Defensive miscues allowed UMD tied the game in the sixth and jump ahead 4-2 in the seventh.
Coming off two walk-off wins in the past week, the Marauders nearly pulled off a third. Shaul crushed a two-run home run in the ninth to tie the game but U-Mary left the winning run on third base.
The bullpens took command over the next four innings as neither team could plate a run.
With the sun setting and the temperatures continuing to drop, Minnesota Duluth eventually found a clutch hit in the 14
th inning. With one out, the Bulldogs loaded the bases on two hit batters and an intentional walk. In his only at bat of the game, Kellen McCoshen doubled to center field to score two runs.
U-Mary fell just short of a win in the home half of the 14
th innings. Deyle scored Beyer on a single to right but the Marauders couldn't find a second run to keep U-Mary alive.
Shaul was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Beyer finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Deyle was 2-for-6 with two RBI.
Cody Aasen finished 4-for-6 with an RBI before being ejected late in the game. His replacement, McCoshen, ripped a game-winning two run single. Skyler Wenninger was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Grant Farley and Wojchiechowski both scored twice.
Michael Vollrath had another strong outing for U-Mary. In seven innings he allowed just two earned runs, eight hits and no walks. He struck out four.
Sam Salveson added two scoreless runs and Travis Famius one. Steckler came on in the second game also, allowing one hit, two runs, three hits and four strikeouts in four innings.
The Marauders continue their 12-game homestand with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Winnipeg on Thursday, April 17, at 1:30 PM.
