Rattlers Bite Marauders on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Looking to gain a split on the opening day of the season, the University of Mary baseball team saw the potential tying run thrown out at home for the final out in a 2-1 loss at #15 St. Mary's University. The Rattlers captured the opener 7-2 in the first game played at Dickson Stadium, located on the STMU campus.

Game 1 (7 innings): St. Mary's University 7 U-Mary 2
Playing the opening game in its new ballpark, St. Mary's University jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four times in the first inning and adding three more in the third for a 7-0 advantage.

After leaving the bases loaded in the second inning, the Marauders plated two runs in the fourth. Scott Held led off with a single and stole second. Sam Ingemansen then walked with one out before the duo pulled off a double steal to move into scoring position. Following a strikeout, Andrew Beyer hit a two-run single to center to plate both runners, cutting the deficit to 7-2.

Unable to generate any offense in the fifth and sixth innings, a Beyer single and a walk to Alex Deyle gave the Marauders two baserunners in the seventh but U-Mary was unable to capitalize.

In his first collegiate game, Beyer led the Marauders with two singles and two RBI. Scott Held had U-Mary's only other hit.

Shane Trattles threw a complete game for the Marauders, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits and a walk in six innings.

Leadoff hitter Scott Jones had three of the Rattlers 12 hits. He scored once and drove in three runs. Al Gonzalez and Omar Garcia both had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Rene Solis earned the win for the Rattlers. He struck out nine in a seven inning complete game, allowing three hits and five walks.

GAME 2 (9 innings): St. Mary's University 2 U-Mary 1
Fighting to scratch out a tie, U-Mary's Dwight Mack was thrown out at home plate attempting to score on a fly ball to center for the final out of the game.
Down a run in the top of the ninth inning, Mack led off with a pinch hit single. A passed ball and a sacrifice bunt moved him to third base with one out. Ingemansen then lofted a fly ball to center fielder Adrian Garcia and Mack made a mad dash towards home. Garcia's throw home was cut off by first baseman Nathan Humpal, who made a strong relay throw to Keith Funk that allowed the Rattlers catcher to apply the tag just as Mack was reaching the plate.

Behind an outstanding pitching performance by Michael Vollrath, the Marauders had the lead entering the seventh inning. The junior lefty from Winnipeg, Manitoba, held the St. Mary's hitless until there were two outs in the sixth inning. Brad Horan then relieved Vollrath and popped up the lone batter he faced to end the inning and preserve a 1-0 U-Mary lead.

Vollrath allowed just the lone hit and no runs in 5.2 innings. He struck out one and walked five.

The Marauders gained the lead in the third inning on a two-out Jason Shaul single to left, scoring Mason Schiff who had reached on a walk.

Offensively U-Mary ran into bad luck in the final three innings. Attempting to take second after singling to right, Schiff was thrown out for the final out in the seventh. In the eighth, Austin Grundstad singled and Jason Shaul doubled with one out but both runners were stranded in scoring position.

The Rattlers tied the game in the seventh on a two-out single by Drake Roberts to left field. In the eighth a run-scoring single by Funk brought home what proved to be the game-winner.

Grundstad and Shaul led the six hit U-Mary attack with two hits each. Garcia had two of St. Mary's six hits.

The Marauders and Rattlers conclude the four-game weekend set on Sunday, Feb. 9. Game one starts at 12 noon.
