BURNABY, BC - Facing a game time temperature of 54 degrees, an encroaching fog and a persisting rain on the pitch, the University of Mary Men's Soccer team took on Simon Fraser University in another Great Northwest matchup. It was a tough night for the Marauders as they had a lead going into halftime, only to surrender a slew of goals in the second period.
Â
The Clan outshot the Marauders 11-4 in the first half but U-Mary employed a stiff defense led by goalkeeper
Michael Frenzel, who returned to the pitch after missing a few games due to injury. Frenzel stopped seven shots in the first half and got some help as a Simon Fraser shot came close to finding the back of the net but careened off the post.
Â
Aaron Brennan notched the first goal of the game in the 24th minute as he corralled a pass from
Liam Smallwood, dribbled the ball to the top of the penalty area, and fired off a quick strike that flew past the goalkeeper for Simon Fraser, giving U-Mary a 1-0 lead. The Marauders carried that lead into halftime.
Â
The second half had eerily similar stats to the first, with the exception being three goals given up by the Marauders. Leading scorer #9 Jovan Blagojevic broke through U-Mary's defensive front and netted the first goal for the Clan in the 54th minute off a pass from #24 Robert Hyams. Blagojevic took the ball into the penalty box and netted a shot to knot the score at 1-1. After a brief pause, the Clan came right back and Blagojevic recorded his second goal of the game in the 56th minute after he took a cross from #12 Ryan Dhillon and fired a shot to give Simon Fraser the lead at 2-1.
Â
The teams continued to fight back and forth for a few more minutes but Simon Fraser would not slow down as Hyams took a corner and the resulting kick found its way to #11 Niko Schroettle, whose shot gave the Clan a 3-1 lead. Simon Fraser would go on to win the match.
Â
Brennan recorded his goal off two shots, both of which were on target. Smallwood had the only assist for the Marauders.
Christoffer Nogueira was active on the pitch but couldn't find an answer for the Clan's defense as he took three shots, only one of which was on target.
Â
Frenzel finished the game with nine saves.
Â
The Marauders (4-8-2, 3-8-1 GNAC) wrap up their last road game of the regular season with a visit to Bellingham, Wash., to take on the Western Washington University Vikings.
