Marauders Raided by Vikings in Difficult GNAC Matchup

BELLINGHAM, WASH. - The University of Mary Men's Soccer team paid a visit to Western Washington University tonight in the last road game in the conference schedule for U-Mary. It was a hard fought match for the Marauders but a flurry of goals in both halves from the Vikings proved too much as U-Mary lost the match 6-1.

The Vikings struck fast in the first half, notching the first goal of the game in the fourth minute after Tye Hastings headed in a cross from about four yards in the front of the net, giving Western Washington a 1-0 lead. Christoffer Nogueira had a good chance to tie the score but Viking goalkeeper Keegan Rogers saved his shot in the 22nd minute of the match.

The Vikings opened the floodgates from there, tallying the second goal in the 33rd minute after Gabriele Zaacagnini took a through pass about six yards in front of the net and snuck a shot by Michael Frenzel to give Western Washington a 2-0 lead. Shortly after in the 34th minute, Matt Temple corralled a cross into the box and fired off a quick strike about seven yards in front of the net and gave the Vikings a 3-0 lead. Nogueira tried to get U-Mary on the board late in the first half, but his shot hit the crossbar and the Marauders faced a 3-0 deficit going into halftime.

Not wasting any time, the Vikings kept the pace up and netted their fourth goal of the game in the 54th minute after Temple took a trough pass and fired a strike past the keeper about eight yards out to give Western Washington a 4-0 lead. Not long after that, Hastings pulled in a rebounded shot off Frenzel in the 59th minute and the resulting shot gave the Vikings a commanding 5-0 lead.

Nogueira and Jonathan Sellars finally teamed up to break the dry spell for the Marauders as Nogueira had a corner kick in the 86th minute, which found its way to Sellars as he headed in the ball past the Viking goalkeeper and got U-Mary on the board 5-1.

However the Viking wouldn't give the Marauders a chance to gain any momentum, and responded with a goal in the 88th minute after Drew Barker beat the keeper one on one, putting the Viking lead back to five goals. U-Mary's energy slowed from there and Western Washington took the match 6-1.

Sellars needed only one shot to find the back of the net, and the resulting goal was his first of the season. Nogueira registered his team leading fifth assist of the year. Frenzel ended the match with four saves.

The Marauders (4-9-2, 3-9-1 GNAC) return home for their last home match of the 2014 regular season when they host travel partner South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday, Nov. 8.
