SEATTLE, WASH. - The University of Mary Men's Soccer team paid a visit to #3 Seattle Pacific University tonight, and the Marauders were on the outside looking in on a game cut short by the lights against the Falcons.
Â
The Marauders got off on the wrong foot in the first half against Seattle Pacific; #12 Stephen MacDonald cut off a pass intended for goal keeper
Jack West about two yards in front of the goal and snuck a shot into the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the match. The Marauders struggled to get the offense going after that mistake. Seattle Pacific fired off two more shots, both were saved by West, before U-Mary had an opportunity for a shot attempt which sailed wide right of the goal off
Aaron Brennan's foot.
Â
The Falcons kept the Marauders on their heels for the remained of the half. U-Mary went into halftime with the score still 1-0 in favor of Seattle Pacific.
Â
The second half is where things got strange.
Â
The Falcons fired off three more shots early in the second period with nothing on target. Brennan had his second shot of the match coming in the 52nd minute; this one traveled wide left. West made his third save of the day in the 56th minute, which ended up being the third shot in as many minutes from the Falcons.
Â
Jordan Pearce had an opportunity to get the Marauders on the board, but his shot also went left of the goal. Seattle Pacific kept the pressure on U-Mary as they took 3 consecutive corner kick followed by shots in less than three minutes. The Marauder defense locked down the area in front of the net, though, as no Falcon shot came on target.
Â
Logan Christensen took what would later be the last shot for U-Mary, but his shot flew right of the goal and the Marauders were running out of ideas.
Â
Then, in an unfortunate twist, a power outage struck the city of Seattle and caused the lights to go out in Interbay Stadium where the teams were battling tonight. The clock sat at 81:29 as both teams hoped for the game to resume but that would not be the case.
Â
According to the NCAA rule book, if a game has progressed pass 70 minutes, is delayed due to extenuating circumstances, and cannot be resumed later in the day, then the officials can declare the contest complete and award a victory, loss, or draw depending on the score. Regrettably for the Marauders the game was awarded a victory in favor of the Falcons and won't be rescheduled or finished at a later date.
Â
U-Mary (4-7-2, 3-7-1 GNAC) will finish their road trip next week, starting with a visit to Burnaby, British Columbia, in a match against Simon Fraser University.
