Marauders Dominate the Saints with a Four Goal Outburst

LACEY, WASH. - The University of Mary Men's Soccer team took on Saint Martin's University today, and the Marauders were hoping to avenge an early season loss to the Saints in another Great Northwest matchup.

The Marauder dominated the first half of the match, but were beset by untimely mistakes similar to the Northwest Nazarene match. After an early corner kick from the Saints, the Marauders gave up the first goal of the game on another unfortunate own goal in the 11th minute, giving Saint Martin's the 1-0 advantage.

U-Mary fought back, though, and turned up the pressure by firing off seven shots in the half compared to the Saints' lone shot, which was saved by goalkeeper Jack West. The Marauders also unleashed six corner kicks to the Saints' two, but nothing found the back of the net.

Jordan Pearce finally broke through with his team leading eighth goal of the year coming in the 42nd minute. Pearce took a pass from Christoffer Nogueira and beat the Saints defense with a scoring strike about 10 yards in front of the net.

The rest of the half played out without much action although both teams did receive a yellow card in the first half. The Marauders were undoubtedly better composed as they were only charged with one foul while the Saints were charged with eight. The scored was tied 1-1 going into halftime.

The second half started out the same as the first, as U-Mary had a corner kick opportunity in the 46th minute, followed by two shots from Pearce less than 10 minutes later. Saint Martin's fired off a shot of their own in the 58th minute, but it sailed wide right of the goal. The Marauders scored the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute after Nogueira took a pass from Pearce and beat the keeper with a shot hitting the upper right corner of the net to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Saints tried to follow up with a tying goal in the 73rd minute, but West put a stop to that shot without much difficulty. Tensions continue to run high as both teams were given another yellow card in the 75th and 76th minute, as both teams were encouraged to settle down.

The Marauders decided to open up the floodgates from there.

Nogueira notched his second goal of the match, seventh of the season, in the 81st minute after his shot snuck pass the keeper and into the corner of the net about eight yards out. Not even 13 seconds later, Logan Christensen recorded his first goal of the season after he stole the ball away from the Saints and took it singlehandedly to the goal, giving the Marauders a commanding 4-1 lead.

There was little else the Saints could do to stop the balanced attack from the Marauders, and U-Mary won the match 4-1.

Nogueira was incredibly active on the offensive end of the pitch as he finished with two goals on three shots and added one assist. Pearce recorded his lone goal on four shots while adding one assist. Christensen earned one goal and only needed one shot to accomplish his feat.

West ended the game with two saves and was one blunder away from recording his first clean sheet of the year.

The Marauders demonstrated their composure as they out shot the Saints 14-3 in the match, with a 7-2 advantage going to U-Mary in the second half.  The Saints frustration was apparent as they finished the game with 18 fouls, compared to the Marauder's three.

U-Mary (4-6-2, 3-6-1 GNAC) continues their road trip with a visit to Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 25, where they'll face the #3 Falcons in another revenge match.
