Marauders Ransack the Yellowjackets in a Great Northwest Matchup

BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Mary took on Montana State Univesity - Billings today, and the Marauders dominated both ends of the field en route to a 2-1 Great Northwest victory over the Yellowjackets.

The Marauders wasted little time netting the first goal of the match; Christoffer Nogueira took a through pass from Jonathan Sellars in the second minute and beat the Yellowjackets' goal keeper one-on-one for his fourth goal of the season, giving U-Mary a 1-0 lead.

Tensions ran high early in the first half after the first goal; MSU-Billings had several opportunities to tie the match with four corner kicks compared to none for U-Mary, and the Yellowjackets were snubbed twice by keeper Jack West, who thwarted two of the MSU-Biilings' shots before the 10th minute of play. The Yellowjackets were issued a yellow card in the 18th minute after one of their players continually argued with the center referee and the referee had enough. West made his third save of the game in the 32nd minute and kept the Yellowjackets scoreless going into halftime.

The second half sang a similar tune, as West stopped another shot from MSU-Billings in the 51st minute and the Marauder offense took over from there.

Keeping the pressure up, U-Mary had a string of four corner kicks in a span of two minutes starting with Nogueira in the 62nd minute. Aaron Mc Elwee fired off two corners of his own and the Yellowjackets' keeper had to punch away one from going into the net. Nogueira took a second corner opportunity after Mc Elwee's failed attempt and finally broke through with his second goal of the game in the 64th minute coming directly off a corner kick, shades of David Beckham shining through for the forward from Sweden.

The Yellowjackets would not go quietly and finally got on the board with a shot coming in the 68th minute. #29 Julian Toenges had the ball on the near corner and fed it to #6 Colin Ralston who was about 10 yards in front of the net. Ralston's shot snuck past West and cut the lead in half at 2-1.

The rest of the second half was another defensive clinic put on by the Marauders; West made two more saves and U-Mary's defense was exceedingly active as they poked away more than a handful of MSU-Billings opportunities that won't show on the stat sheet. The Marauders eventually won 2-1.

West finished the game with six saves in 90 minutes. Nogueira's two goal came on four shots, while Sellars earned his first assist of the season.

The Marauders (3-6-2, 2-6-1 GNAC) are on the road for their next four games, starting with a visit to Lacey, Wash., to take on Saint Martin's University on Thursday, Oct. 23.
