Facing Stiff Competition U-Mary Finishes 1-3 at UCM Duals

RESULTS

CORRECTED STORY: Johnson, Krumm and Westbury won by fall not by forfeit. U-Mary faced Central Missouri in its final match not Central Oklahoma.

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- In its first action of the new year, the University of Mary wrestling team competed Sunday at the 2014 Comfort Inn/UCM Duals. In a tournament that featured two teams ranked in the top 15 and 10 nationally ranked individuals, U-Mary (0-2, 0-2 NSIC) finished the day with a team mark of 1-3.

Trevor Johnson (149) highlighted the Marauders effort finishing the day with a 3-1 mark. Johnson's only loss of the day came at the hands of No. 3 Frank Cagnina in a 9-4 decision.

U-Mary opened the day with defending national champions Nebraska-Kearney. The No. 2 ranked Lopers made quick work of the Marauders winning 41-6. Johnson was the only U-Mary wrestler to score winning by fall at 4:12.

Next up for U-Mary was No. 12 Ouachita Baptist. Despite a much-improved effort from their opening round loss, the Marauders fell 34-14. Johnson picked up his second win of the day with a technical fall and Brock Krumm (165) won by way of an 11-4 decision. Jonah Westbury  (285) picked up his first win of the season by fall at 3:29.

The third time was a charm for U-Mary as it picked up its only win of the day in the third round against Newman. Winning five of 10 matches, the Marauders won 27-22. Alec Lindsey (141) got U-Mary on the board with his first win of the season. Johnson followed with a win by fall to give the Marauders the lead. Krumm picked up his second win of the day by fall at 6:11. Riley Nagel (174) and John Devito (184) rounded out the scoring for U-Mary.

U-Mary rounded out the day against Central Missouri. The Mules jumped ahead early winning the first four matches, before Brandon DeLao (157) put the Marauders on the board. DeLao picked up a 5-2 decision for U-Mary's only points of the match. The Marauders fell by a final of 39-3.

U-Mary will not compete again for nearly a month when it hosts St. Cloud State University on Feb. 1.
