Senior Trio Keys Win Over Bulldogs as Marauders Gain Weekend Sweep

Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – Powered by their three seniors, the University of Mary men's basketball team rolled past the University of Minnesota Duluth 83-67. Jalen Jaspers, Marc Musungayi and Mike Johnson scored a combined 43 points and hit over 70 per cent of their shots to give the Marauders their first home weekend sweep in nearly three years.
 
A back-and forth contest, the lead changed hands 28 times during the night and there were nine ties before U-Mary closed the game with a 21-4 run. The Marauders improve to 4-13 overall and 2-10 in the Northern Sun. UMD is 7-9 and 5-7.
 
The Marauders, who beat St. Cloud State University on Friday, won both weekend Northern Sun contests for the first time since defeating Concordia University – St. Paul and SCSU on the road Feb. 18-19, 2011. The last home weekend sweep at the McDowell Activity Center was over Wayne State College and Augustana on Feb. 11-12, 2011.
 
The U-Mary women's basketball team also swept their weekend series, providing Marauders fans four weekend wins at the MAC for the first time since the men and the women both defeated Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State University on Dec. 17-18, 2010.
 
Jaspers scored a team-high 18 points. The Minneapolis, Minn., native hit 8-of-11 shots. He also had four rebounds and three assists.
 
Coming off a career-high 33 points against SCSU, Musungayi followed up with 17 points tonight, including 11 after intermission. The forward from Hamilton, Ontario, was 6-of-10 from the field and hit all five free throws. Musungayi now has hit 22 consecutive free throws. He also had six rebounds and three assists.
 
Johnson was perfect from the field in three attempts, including two behind the arc, as he scored eight points. The guard from Grand Rapids, Minn., also had two assists.
 
Freshman guard Damonta Henry added 14 points, hitting three treys on the night. Chris Mason nearly had a double double, posting nine points and nine rebounds.
 
Jordan Reetz led all players with 22 points. The Bulldogs guard had 18 at the half. Reece Zoelle and Junior Coleman both added 14 points for UMD.
 
 A tight game throughout, the tide changed on a three-point play from Isaac Lindquist. With 8:19 remaining in the game, the Marauders freshman post was fouled while making a jumper. He then hit the free throw to provide U-Mary a 65-63 lead with 8:19 remaining in the game.
 
The Lindquist basket started a 21-4 Marauders run to close the game. U-Mary hit all 10 free throw attempts down the stretch while UMD made just 2-of-13 field goal attempts.
U-Mary hit 51.9 per cent of its shots on the night and was 21-of-25 at the free throw line. UMD made 47.1 per cent of its field goal attempts and made 12-of-17 free throws. The Marauders held a 34-25 edge in rebounds.
 
The Marauders continue their four-game home stand by hosting Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston on Alumni Weekend, January 24-25.
