Box Score Bismarck, ND – One long shot ruined an afternoon of hard work by the University of Mary women's soccer team. Facing one of the top attacking teams in the Northern Sun, U-Mary suffered a stunning 1-0 loss when Upper Iowa scored the winning goal with 2:50 remaining in the first overtime.
With the possibility looming large for a second overtime in the Marauders home opener, Aimee Wronski one-timed a looping pass from her sister Corinne from 25 yards out on the left hash mark. Her shot sliced from the left to the right side of the net, evading U-Mary goalkeeper
Shelby Buttron as it tailed away for the only goal of the game. Wronski leads the NSIC in scoring with seven goals.
Before the golden goal, neither team had many outstanding opportunities to score in the match. Early in the first half, U-Mary (1-5-1 overall, 1-2-1 NSIC) freshman
Megan Searson blasted a shot towards the left side of the net that was blocked on the goal line by an Upper Iowa (5-2, 3-1) defender.
The Marauders had two more chances to score after intermision.
Andrea Muller beat Peacocks goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel to a loose ball to the right of the net in the 57
th minute but the U-Mary forward missed the upper corner from a tough angle. In another race to the ball in the 72
nd minute, Muller got a foot on the ball just as Emanuel arrived, allowing the Upper Iowa goalie to redirect the ball away from the net.
In overtime, Upper Iowa had the only shot before the winner, a harmless header from distance that went wide.
The Marauders defense limited the Peacocks to 11 shots, with six on frame. Upper Iowa entered the averaging two goals, 19 shots and over nine shots on frame per game.
U-Mary managed five shots with three on target. The Marauders held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Next up for the Marauders is a home game Sunday, Sept. 29, against Winona State University. Game time is 2:30 PM at the MDU Resources Bowl.
