First Half Deficit Too Much to Overcome in Marauders Loss to Emporia State

Marc Musungayi named to GCI Alaska Invitational all-tournament team

Box Score Fairbanks, AK – GCI Alaska Invitational all-tournament selection Marc Musungayi scored a team-high 16 points for the University of Mary, one of four teammates in double figures, but the Marauders were unable to overcome a first half deficit in a 79-68 loss to Emporia State University.
 
Trailing by as many as 12 points before halftime, the Marauders (2-3 overall) cut the deficit to 53-51 with 7:41 remaining in the game on back-to-back baskets by Musungayi and a layup by Brandon Tyler.
 
After scoring their last basket of the game with nearly three minutes remaining, the Hornets (5-2) held the Marauders off at the free throw line. In the last minute of play Emporia State was 9-of-10 at the stripe.
 
For the game the Hornets made 29-of-35 free throws while the Marauders were 14-of-20. ESU also held an edge in shooting percentage (45.7 per cent to 40-.7 per cent) and three-point shooting (8-of-13 to 4-of-15) while U-Mary managed a 36-30 rebounding advantage.
 
Musungayi, who averaged 16.7 points per game over the three-day Alaska Invitational, posted 16 points on 7-of-16 shooting and a 2-for-2 effort at the line. He also had six rebounds.
 
Chris Mason posted a double-double for the Marauders, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 a game-high 10 rebounds. He was 2-of-3 behind the arc and added two assists.
 
Tyler chipped in 10 points in a starting role.
 
Devan Douglas gave the Marauders a spark off the bench, scoring 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. He also had three assists, three rebounds and two steals before fouling out.
 
Emporia State's Terrance Moore paced all players with 24 points. Most of his damage was done at the line, where he was 12-of-14. Kaleb Wright, 12-of-13 on free throw attempts, added 18 points. Jevon Taylor scored 12 and Paul Bunch chipped in six points and four blocks.
 
The Marauders next play at Minot State University to open Northern Sun action on Saturday, Nov. 30.
