Box Score Fairbanks, AK – In a hard-fought contest that featured a dozen lead changes and a dozen ties, the University of Mary men's basketball team came up just short in a 67-64 loss to Fresno Pacific University on day two of the GCI Alaska Invitational.
Two
Jalen Jaspers free throws with 1:40 remaining in the contest provided the Marauders a 64-62 lead. It was also the last time U-Mary would score in the game.
The Sunbirds immediately tied the contest on a layup by Josh Mason. Looking to regain the lead for the Marauders,
Devan Douglas had his shot rejected by Phil Jackson. Mason rebounded the ball for FPU and Drew Packard scored the go-ahead points for the Sunbirds with 49 seconds remaining. Attempting to tie the game, a jumper by
Marc Musungayi fell just short and Mason again rebounded the ball.
Soon fouled with 19 seconds remaining, Mason made 1-of-2 free throws to extend the Sunbirds advantage to 67-64.
Damonta Henry attempted to slice into the deficit but his layup attempt was swatted away by Jackson. Now needing to hit a three-pointer to force overtime, the Marauders turned the ball over before getting a shot off.
Musungayi led all players with 18 points. He also had seven rebounds and two assists. Henry, a freshman guard, scored 11 points off the bench for the second straight game. He knocked down three of U-Mary's four treys in the game and snagged three rebounds. Jaspers also cracked double figures with 10 points and added two steals.
In addition to Henry, several reserves had a strong showing for U-Mary as the Marauders bench outscored the Sunbirds bench 27-11.
Germain Decoste hauled down seven rebounds and hit both his field goal attempts, scoring four points.
Devan Douglas and
Isaac Lindquist, who was 3-for-3 from the floor, both chipped in six points.
Jackson scored 17 points and had nine rebounds and three blocks for Fresno Pacific. Malcom Griffin also had 17 points. Clayton had 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Marauders shot 43.5 per cent from the field to 46.6 per cent for the Sunbirds.
U-Mary concludes its three game set at the Alaska Invitational against Emporia State University on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 8 PM central.
