Young and Old Contribute in Marauders 2-1 Win Over the Golden Bears

McGeary scores 1st collegiate goal, assists on Alex Bachman-Williams' winner

Box Score St. Paul, MN – With a freshman scoring early and a senior late, the University of Mary women's soccer team found their way back into the win column with a 2-1 victory at Concordia University, St. Paul. Michelle McGeary scored her first collegiate goal and assisted on the game-winner by four-year starter Alex Bachman-Williams.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Marauders, who improve to 2-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Northern Sun play. The Golden Bears slip to 3-6-0 and 2-4-0.

Taking advantage of a Golden Bears defensive error, the Marauders grabbed the lead in the seventh minute. A freshman from Gillette, Wyo., McGeary intercepted a bad pass and hit a rolling shot past the Concordia keeper.

The Golden Bears answered back with a counter at 24:48. Following the initial shot by Kaylyn Rae Smith, Alahna Anderson put a rebound home from point blank range. It was her third of the year.

The Marauders would continue pressing to score all evening and finally broke through again in the 79th minute. Taking a pass from McGeary, Bachman-Williams headed the ball into the top right corner of the net. For the two-time all-region forward it was her third goal of the season, first game-winner and 31st counter of her collegiate career.

With Blair Brookshire back to anchor the defense, the Marauders gave up just two shots in the final 11 minutes, with neither of them on frame.

Shelby Buttron backstopped the Marauders win by making four saves in the game. Emma Gartner made eight for the Golden Bears.

U-Mary had a 15-14 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in shots on frame. CU managed a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.

The Marauders next play at #5 Minnesota State University, Mankato on Sunday, October 6, at 1 PM.
