Box Score Bismarck, ND – After a difficult loss on Saturday, the University of Mary women's soccer team hoped to rebound with a win against the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday. The Marauders kept pace early but the Bulldogs, tied for second in the Northern Sun, scored three goals in the first half on a way to a 4-0 win.
The Bulldogs (9-2 overall, 8-1 Northern Sun) scored twice within a four-minute stretch one-third of the way into the match. One of the leading goal scorers in the conference, Maureen Stormont backed her defender into the 6-yard box, turned and shot low right past U-Mary (2-9-1, 2-6-1) goalkeeper
Shelby Buttron for a 1-0 UMD lead at 31:40. Katie Schneider then one-timed a ball from eight yards out at 35:07 to double the Bulldogs lead.
A Megan Helberg header off a corner kick in the 44
th minute extended the UMD lead to 3-0 at intermission.
Just before half, though, the Marauders nearly sliced into the deficit.
Andrea Muller hit a point-blank shot off UMD keeper Marissa Rosa and
Dayna Domingo's shot off the rebound was stopped by a Bulldogs defender on the goal line.
Stormont closed the scoring in the 64
th minute, intercepting a U-Mary clearing pass and lifting a shot over the Marauders goalie from 20 yards out for her second goal of the game.
Both teams had six corner kicks and UMD committed six fouls to three for U-Mary but UMD held an edge in shots (22-11) and shots on frame (15-7).
Michelle McGeary led U-Mary with two shots on frame. Buttron made five saves in the first half and
Bailey Wenz, who played between the pipes for the final 45 minutes, stopped six scoring attempts.
The Marauders continue their four-game home stand on Friday, October 18, with a 7 PM game against Wayne State College at the MDU Resources Bowl. It is U-Mary's Breast Cancer Awareness Night and the start of Senior and Parents Weekend.
