Brady Anderson knocked off the fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation in overtime and
Trevor Johnson and
Landon Della Silva also earned wins for the second straight night but the University of Mary couldn't keep pace with 13
th ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Mavericks picked up a 26-13 Northern Sun home win over the Marauders. It was the second straight night U-Mary had faced a nationally-ranked team.
Down 9-0 after the first two matches due to Mavericks (4-2 overall, 1-0 NSIC) wins by major decision and technical fall, the Marauders (1-4, 1-3) would roar back to take the lead after impressive performances by Johnson and Della Silva.
Ranked second in the nation at 141, Johnson jumped out to a huge 9-2 lead in the first period behind three takedowns of Nathan Hennes and a three-point near fall. The U-Mary All-American followed up with an escape and another takedown before finishing the match by pinning Hennes at 4:52.
The Marauders gained a 10-9 lead after Della Silva earned a 13-4 major decision over Thomas Allen at 149. The senior from Corvallis, MT, jumped out to a four-point lead 45 seconds into the match on a takedown and a two-point near fall. He would continue to dominate the match in the second period as he recorded two more takedowns.
U-Mary suffered a difficult loss at 157 when
Collin Engelhardt fell 3-2 in double overtime to Sawyer Hoffman. Leading late in the third after a takedown, Engelhardt was called for stalling and Hoffman was awarded a point. Hoffman then pulled even with an escape with 12 seconds left in regulation. The Mavericks grappler would win the match with a point for riding time at the end of the second overtime.
After winning by major decision at 165 and 174, the Mavericks would increase their lead to 20-10.
Facing off against one of four nationally-ranked wrestlers for MSU, Anderson would pick up the Marauders last win of the night at 184. In a defensive battle, the 5
th ranked Norgren used an escape in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Anderson forced overtime when he scored the lone point of the third period on an escape.
Just 17 seconds into overtime, Anderson took advantage of an opening and overpowered Norgren, taking him to the mat for a winning takedown. The senior from Hamilton, MT, improves to 10-3 this season.
Minnesota State claimed decisions in the final two matches to secure the 26-13 win.
The Marauders next face Minnesota State University Moorhead on January 23 at 7 PM.
