Strong Defensive Effort Leaves Marauders Just Short in Loss to #7 Jennies

Box Score Bismarck, ND – For the second straight game to open the season, the University of Mary posted another strong defensive effort. The performance went for no avail as the Marauders were unable to find the net against one of the top teams in the nation. Ranked seventh in the country, the University of Central Missouri controlled play and scored the lone goal of the night in a 1-0 win over U-Mary.

After winning a 1-0 game in overtime on Sunday, the Marauders (1-1 overall / 1-0 NSIC) held the Jennies (3-0) in check throughout the first half. U-Mary didn't allow its first goal of the season until Becky Lackey scored for UCM in the 49th minute.

Aayrn Burke took control of the ball in the Marauders defensive zone and sent a cross from the left side to Lackey as she broke in alone towards the U-Mary net for the only goal of the night.

The Jennies were able to stifle the Marauders attack much of the game. U-Mary managed just eight shots, including only one on net. Central Missouri attempted 14 shots to keep Marauders goalkeeper Ashley Akers active all night. The senior stopped seven of the eight shots she faced that were on frame.

Central Missouri also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks while U-Mary was whistled for 11 of the 15 fouls called in the game.

This was the first time the two teams had played one another since UCM defeated U-Mary 2-1 in the 2007 NCAA playoffs.

The Marauders next host Southwest Baptist University, another member of the MIAA, on Saturday, September 8, at 11 AM in the Community Bowl.
