Pacpaco's Golden Goal Lifts Marauders Over Golden Bears

Box Score Bismarck, ND – Taking advantage of a defensive miscue in overtime, Kelsey Pacpaco scored a golden goal on a header to lift the University of Mary women's soccer team past Concordia University – St. Paul 3-2 in Northern Sun competition.

With Alex Bachman-Williams driving towards the Golden Bears (4-5-1 overall, 3-3-1 NSIC) end line outside the penalty box, Chloe Moore hauled her down for a foul to earn the CU defender a yellow card and granting the Marauders (4-5-0, 4-3-0) a free kick.

U-Mary senior midfielder Michelle Jones served the ball from the left side of the field to the far post. Pacpaco was able to gain position and head the ball directly into the net with just 3:18 left in the first overtime for the junior's first goal of the season. For Jones it was her second assist of the game.

The Marauders jumped out to a two-goal lead before needing to strike back at the end for the win. U-Mary scored first on an own goal at 20:22. Kaitlin Walsh played a ball high towards the Golden Bears net that a CU defender attempted to head away. Instead the ball was knocked just under the crossbar for a 1-0 Marauders lead.

Just 3:39 later, the Marauders struck again, this time off a set piece. Jones served a corner kick from the right to the far left of the goal box. Blaire Brookshire got her head on the ball and centered it in front of the net for Andrea Muller. The Marauders sophomore forward one-timed the ball into the net for a two-goal advantage.

The lead didn't hold up for long. In the 36th minute the Marauders were called for a hand ball in the penalty box. Kim Sauberlich drilled the resulting penalty kick into the right side of the goal.

The Golden Bears evened the game in the 42nd minute. On a scramble following a corner kick, Sam McBain knocked the ball in from the right side of the goal.

Marauders goalkeeper Ashley Akers kept the game even in the second half, making five saves after intermission. She finished the day with seven saves total.

Both teams managed 14 shots for the game but CU held a 10-6 edge in shots on frame. The Golden Bears also had an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Marauders now start a four game road trip, first heading to the University of Minnesota Duluth on October 6.
