Bismarck, ND – Back to back pins by
Trevor Johnson and
Tanner Beaman electrified the University of Mary wrestling team and the Marauders recovered from an early deficit to defeat Northern State University 22-20. Each team won five matches but the two U-Mary pins proved to be the difference maker in a tight Northern Sun dual.
Trailing 10-0 after the Wolves opened with a major decision and a pin, Johnson started a run of four straight wins for the Marauders. The second ranked 141-pounder in the nation, the sophomore from Bismarck, ND, pinned Tyler Frost 2:29 into the match.
Returning to the mat for the first time in several weeks, Beaman proved the time off hadn't dulled his skills as he took just 39 seconds to pin Gavin Larsen at 149. His win gave the Marauders a 12-10 lead and U-Mary would stay in front the rest of the night.
In a tight defensive battle,
Collin Engelhardt captured a 3-2 win at 157 over Neil Sell. Recognized before the match on Senior Night,
Taylor Nagel won an 8-0 major decision over Blake Lundgren. A takedown and two near falls provided Nagel an insurmountable 6-0 lead after the first period and the win grew the Marauders advantage to 19-10.
The Wolves captured the next two matches before
Kriss McCleary put the Marauders back in the win column. McCleary jumped out to a 5-0 lead midway through the second and claimed a 7-2 win at 197 over Bakar Haar and a 22-17 U-Mary team lead.
McCleary's win provided some breathing room for the Marauders other senior,
Martin Patron, who was facing the nation's second ranked wrestler at 285. Matt Mueleners would claim an 8-2 win over Patron but it wasn't enough for the Wolves to catch the Marauders team score.
With the regular season now complete for the Marauders, U-Mary next competes at the NCAA Super Region II in St. Cloud, MN, on Sunday, February 26.
