Box Score Mandan, ND – In a battle for playoff positioning,
Michelle Jones blasted home the game-winning goal for the University of Mary in a 2-1 win over Bemidji State University. The win propels the Marauders past both the Beavers and St. Cloud State into fifth place in the Northern Sun standings.
The fourth straight win for U-Mary improves the club to 8-5 in the NSIC standings and 8-7 overall. BSU slips to 9-6-1 overall and 7-5-1 in conference matches. Tied for sixth in the NSIC with St. Cloud State entering the weekend, the Marauders now stand alone in fifth with 24 points. BSU, SCSU and Concordia-St. Paul are all tied for sixth with 22 points. Just two games remain in the regular season for U-Mary.
The Beavers opened the scoring on Mary O'Brien's eighth goal of the season in the ninth minute of the game. Megan Castro's initial shot was deflected by a Marauders defender to O'Brien, who collected the ball and found the back of the net. It was the only goal of the opening half.
Scoring her third goal of the weekend for the Marauders,
Alex Bachman-Williams one-timed a long cross from
Destiny Glaser into the middle of the box to even the game at 1-1 at 49:25.
Jones would break the deadlock in the 79
th minute. Taking control of the ball 35 yards out, the senior midfielder crushed a high shot that glanced off the crossbar into the net for a 2-1 Marauders lead.
The Marauders held an 11-7 edge in shots and a 9-4 advantage in shots on frame. U-Mary managed four corner kicks to one for BSU.
Next up is U-Mary's final home game of the season against Northern State on October 26.
