Bismarck, ND – Trevor Johnson and Martin Patron captured two matches apiece but the University of Mary couldn't keep pace with two of the top teams in the nation in the first Northern Sun action of the season for the Marauders. U-Mary opened with a 28-12 loss to St. Cloud State University, the top-ranked team in the nation. Upper Iowa University, ranked third nationally, followed with a 32-7 win over the Marauders.
The fourth-ranked grappler in the nation at 141, Johnson rolled to a pair of wins for the Marauders. The sophomore from Bismarck, ND, picked up a 9-2 victory over Jay Hildreth of St. Cloud State in the opener. Johnson closed out the day with a 10-1 major decision over Upper Iowa's Duane Richardson. He improves to 20-4 on the season.
Patron opened with a 7-2 win over SCSU's Caleb White. Patron jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a pair of takedowns and added a third to lead 7-1 after two periods.
The Marauders heavyweight closed the day in dramatic fashion. Tied 1-1 with Luke Stika of Upper Iowa, Patron won the match on a takedown with five seconds remaining in a 3-1 win.
St. Cloud State earned a major decision and a technical fall to jump out to a 9-0 lead over U-Mary in the first dual of the day. Johnson would get the Marauders on the scoreboard with a win at 141.
After SCSU won by fall at 149, Collin Engelhardt picked up a 5-3 win for U-Mary at 157 over Jacob R. Horn. After a scoreless first period, the junior from Bismarck, ND, staked himself to a 5-1 lead partway through the second and held on for the decision.
Taylor Nagel fell just short at 165. Leading 3-2 after a reversal to start the second, Dan Dick used a pair of escapes to pull out a 4-3 win for SCSU. The Huskies followed with a pin at 174.
Brady Anderson picked up the Marauders next win with a 7-2 decision over Kurt Salmen. The two teams then split the final two matches as Patron rolled to a win at 285.
The Marauders second dual of the day started in a similar fashion to the opener. U-Mary once again fell behind early as Upper Iowa claimed big wins at 125 and 133, where the Peacocks have the nation's top-ranked wrestlers in both weight divisions. Kyle Pedretti opened with a 17-4 win over freshman Hunter Menendez and Trevor Franklin pinned Kyle Larson, also a U-Mary freshman, at 2:28, and the Peacocks led 10-0.
Johnson again earned the Marauders first win of the match, claiming a 10-1 major decision over Richardson.
The dual would get away from the Marauders during the next three matches. At 149 with the match tied 4-4, Tanner Beaman was pinned by Jordan Rinken with six seconds left just as it appeared that overtime was imminent. Even after two periods at 157, Engelhardt gave up four points in the third to fall 6-2 to Winston Robbins. Nagel led 3-1 after two at 165 but Blake Sorensen came back win 4-3 on an escape and a takedown in the final period.
The Marauders suffered another narrow loss at 184. Anderson used a reversal to lead Mitch Schultz, ranked fourth in the nation, 2-0 after two. Schultz retaliated with a reversal of his own in the third and claimed a 3-2 win over Anderson on riding time.
Patron closed out a busy day for the Marauders on a high note with a buzzer-beating win over Stika.
U-Mary, which is receiving votes in the national Top 20 coaches' poll, travels to Sioux Falls, SD, to face 5th-ranked Augustana on January 20.
